Virupaksha Temple Hampi

Standing proudly on the southern bank of the sacred Tungabhadra River, the Virupaksha Temple is the spiritual heart of Hampi. Unlike many of the surrounding monuments that lie in majestic ruin, Virupaksha has remained an uninterrupted place of worship since the 7th century AD, making it one of India's oldest functioning temples.Dedicated to Lord Virupaksha, an aspect of Lord Shiva, and his consort Goddess Pampa (the local river goddess), the temple complex expands over a vast courtyard surrounded by covered pillared halls, inner sanctums, and smaller shrines. The centerpiece of the complex is the striking 9-tiered Eastern Gopuram (gateway tower), which towers over 50 meters high and dominates the skyline of Hampi Bazaar.Key Highlights & FeaturesThe Pin-Hole Camera Effect: One of the most fascinating features inside the temple complex is a dark hall where an inverted shadow of the massive Eastern Gopuram is projected onto a wall through a tiny opening, demonstrating an early understanding of optical mechanics.Lakshmi the Temple Elephant: Visitors often receive a gentle blessing on the head from Lakshmi, the beloved resident temple elephant, in exchange for a coin or a bunch of bananas.Intricate Reliefs & Paintings: The ceilings of the main pillared hall (Ranga Mantapa) feature magnificent 14th to 16th-century ceiling paintings depicting mythological scenes, including the marriage of Shiva and Pampa and the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu.
