Meenakshi Amman Temple

The Meenakshi Amman Temple, officially known as Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, is the spiritual center of the ancient city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Spanning across 14 acres, this vast complex is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, an avatar of Parvati, and her divine consort, Lord Sundareshwarar (Shiva).Unlike most South Indian temples where the primary male deity takes precedence, Goddess Meenakshi is the dominant central power here. The complex features 14 monumental gateway towers (gopurams), with the southern tower standing as the tallest at nearly 170 feet, adorned with thousands of vibrant, sculpted mythological figures.Key attractions inside the temple grounds include the Potramarai Kulam (Golden Lotus Pond) and the extraordinary Aayiram Kaal Mandapam (Hall of Thousand Pillars), where intricately carved stone pillars present remarkable acoustic and artistic precision.
