Overview of Vishnupad TempleSituated on the banks of the sacred Falgu River in Gaya, Bihar, the Vishnupad Temple is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in Hinduism. The main draw of this ancient temple is the Dharmasila—a 40-centimeter-long footprint of Lord Vishnu embedded directly into a slab of basalt rock, surrounded by an octagonal silver basin.Devotees from across the globe gather here throughout the year, especially during the auspicious period of Pitru Paksha, to perform ancestral rituals (Pinda Daan) aimed at bringing salvation (Moksha) to deceased ancestors. The temple structure stands as an architectural marvel constructed using massive grey granite blocks held together with iron clamps. Built under the patronage of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1787, the temple octagonal shrine towers nearly 30 meters high, crowned with a gold-plated flag and pitcher.
Situated at the heart of Patna, Mahavir Mandir stands as one of the most prominent devotional centers in North India. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the temple complex draws thousands of devotees daily, with numbers swelling to tens of thousands during Tuesdays, Saturdays, and major festivals like Ram Navami. The defining feature of this iconic temple is the presence of twin idols of Lord Hanuman placed side-by-side: one as 'Sankat Mochan' (reliever of troubles) to protect devotees from hardships, and the other as 'Manokamna Mochan' (fulfiller of desires) to grant genuine prayers. Spanning three floors, the temple complex houses sanctums for Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna, and Goddess Durga alongside Lord Hanuman.Devotees visiting Mahavir Mandir also cherish the world-famous Naivedyam laddoos, prepared by expert cooks from Tirupati using pure cow ghee and besan, which hold immense cultural and culinary pride in Bihar. Furthermore, the temple trust (Shri Mahavir Mandir Trust) is renowned for running non-profit super-specialty hospitals like Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, combining spiritual devotion with humanitarian service.
