Sanchi Stupa

The Sanchi Stupa, officially known as the Great Stupa, stands atop a peaceful hill in Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh. Originally commissioned by the Great Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, this iconic monument is a monumental milestone in Indian art and architectural history. The core of the stupa consists of a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the sacred relics of Lord Buddha.What truly sets Sanchi apart are the extraordinarily detailed Toranas (carved gateways) added during the Satavahana period. These four ceremonial gateways face the cardinal directions and present vivid stone relief carvings illustrating scenes from the Jataka tales, key events from the Buddha's life, and rich floral and faunal motifs. Interestingly, Buddha himself is never depicted in human form in the earlier reliefs; instead, he is symbolically represented by symbols like the lotus, wheel, throne, or footprint.Walking around the raised Pradakshina Patha (circumambulatory path) offers visitors a profound sense of tranquillity and awe. The entire complex houses several other stupas, temples, and monastic ruins, making it an irreplaceable sanctuary of Buddhist heritage and peaceful contemplation.
