Shree Jagannath Temple Ahmedabad

October to March is ideal for comfortable weather. To witness the iconic grand festival, visit during the monsoon month of June or July during Ashadhi Beej for the Rath Yatra.

About the Festival

The Shree Jagannath Temple in Ahmedabad stands as one of the most venerated pilgrimage sites in Gujarat. Modeled after the iconic shrine in Puri, Odisha, this temple is deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual fabric of the city. The primary deities worshipped here are Lord Jagannath along with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.

Visiting the temple complex offers a peaceful respite from the urban hustle. The serene morning and evening Aartis draw hundreds of devotees who gather to seek blessings. Beyond its daily rituals, the temple plays a vital role in social service, running a large charitable kitchen (Annakshetra) that provides wholesome meals to pilgrims and those in need.

The grandeur of the temple peaks during the annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival), which is the second-largest Rath Yatra in the world after Puri. During this celebration, massive wooden chariots carrying the deities are pulled through the heritage streets of Ahmedabad, accompanied by vibrant processions, elephants, traditional acrobatics, and thousands of joyful devotees.

Why It's Celebrated

The historical roots of the Ahmedabad Jagannath Temple date back over 400 years. The temple was established by Mahant Hanuman Dasji, a devout saint who installed the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra at this peaceful site near the Sabarmati riverbanks.

Over the generations, the temple grew in stature under successive Mahants. It was Mahant Narsinhdasji who initiated the famous annual Rath Yatra in 1878, a tradition that has continued unbroken for over a century and a half. The architecture evolved from a modest ashram setting into a grand temple structure featuring intricately carved pillars, classical domes, and spacious courtyards while preserving its traditional sanctum sanctorum.
