The Modhera Sun Temple is a testament to the artistic and engineering brilliance of medieval India. Situated peacefully along the banks of the Pushpavati River in Gujarat, this ancient temple complex is dedicated to the solar deity, Surya. Although no active worship takes place here today, the monument stands as an extraordinary protected heritage site under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).The complex is ingeniously divided into three primary structural components aligned along an east-west axis:Surya Kunda (Ramakunda): A grand rectangular stepwell located at the front, embellished with 108 small shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities including Ganesha, Shiva, and Vishnu.Sabha Mandapa: An intricately carved assembly hall supported by 52 elaborately sculpted pillars representing the 52 weeks of the solar year.Guda Mandapa (Sanctum Sanctorum): The inner sanctuary designed so that during the equinoxes, the first rays of the rising sun would illuminate the golden idol of Surya.Visiting Modhera offers an enchanting journey into ancient geometry, astronomy, and stone masonry.
