Designed in the form of a gigantic solar chariot, the temple features 24 elaborately carved stone wheels drawn by seven spirited horses, symbolizing the Sun God Surya traveling across the heavens.Architectural GeniusEvery element of Konark serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose. The 12 pairs of stone wheels represent the months of the Hindu calendar, while the spokes of the wheels function as accurate sundials, capable of telling time to the minute based on the shadow cast by the sun.
