History
The historical origin of Parli Vaijnath Temple is steeped in both ancient Puranic mythology and documented medieval history. Legend has it that the demon king Ravana performed intense penance to Lord Shiva to gain supreme power. Shiva granted him a Jyotirlinga under the condition that Ravana must not set it down on the ground until he reached his kingdom of Lanka. Sensing catastrophic consequences, the Devas sought the aid of Lord Vishnu and Varuna. Ravana was forced to hand the Linga to a shepherd boy (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu), who placed it on the ground right here at Parli when Ravana took too long to return. Despite Ravana’s efforts to lift it, the Linga remained firmly rooted to the earth forever.
Another ancient legend links Parli to the Amrit Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean). When Lord Dhanvantari emerged with the pot of divine nectar (Amrit), Lord Shiva absorbed the toxins and rested at Parli, making it a reservoir of healing energy.
Architecturally, the core structure dates back several centuries, but it suffered extensive damage during medieval invasions. In the late 18th century, Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore—a patron of Hindu temples across India—undertook a grand restoration project. She rebuilt the current stone sanctum, grand entrance steps, and surrounding precincts, preserving its sacred footprint for generations to come.
