History
For centuries, the Binntal valley was a remote, self-sustaining mountain community. High mountain passes such as the Albrunpass served as important historic trade and smuggling routes between Valais in Switzerland and the Piedmont region in northern Italy.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, scientists and collectors realized the incredible geological uniqueness of the valley. The discovery of rare minerals attracted researchers from across Europe. The famous Hotel Ofenhorn in Binn, built in 1883 during the Belle Époque era, hosted pioneer mountaineers and notable guests, including Sir Winston Churchill.
In 2005, the local municipalities voted to establish the regional nature park to protect their natural environment, local heritage, and cultural landscapes from overdevelopment, creating the thriving park recognized today.
