Caumasee, 7018 Flims, Switzerland

About Caumasee

Nestled in a dense forest near Flims in the canton of Grisons, Caumasee (Lake Cauma) is famous for its magical, bright turquoise waters and picturesque wooded island in the center. Its name translates to 'lake of noon siesta', referring to the calm and restful microclimate of the basin.

Because the lake is fed by underground sources, its water temperature remains surprisingly comfortable during summer, reaching between 20°C and 24°C (68°F–75°F), making it one of the top alpine swimming spots in Switzerland.

Visitors can enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, pedalo rides, swimming, relaxing at the beach club, or enjoying a meal at the lakefront restaurant while admiring the mountain views.

History

The origin of Caumasee is deeply linked to the Flims Rockslide (Flimser Bergsturz), which occurred approximately 10,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. It was the largest prehistoric landslide in the Alps, creating the unique topography and drainage system of the region.

Because the lake has no surface inflow or outflow, it is supplied entirely by subterranean spring water, causing its water level to fluctuate naturally by several meters throughout the seasons.

By the late 19th and early 20th century, Flims developed into a prominent spa resort town, with Lake Cauma serving as a peaceful retreat for artists, aristocrats, and nature enthusiasts seeking idyllic Alpine wellness.
