About Crestasee

Discover the Magic of Crestasee

Nestled silently in a dense pine forest between Trin and Flims in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, Crestasee (Lag da Cresta in Romansh) is a natural mountain lake renowned for its breathtaking turquoise and emerald hues. Feeding purely from underground springs, its crystal-clear water offers extraordinary clarity, allowing visitors to view the submerged forest floor and serene aquatic life below.

Surrounded by tall evergreen trees and majestic mountain backdrops, Crestasee feels like a hidden fairytale oasis. During warm summer months, it becomes a peaceful haven for natural swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and rowing. A charming guesthouse sits along the shoreline, serving local Grisons specialties alongside refreshing drinks on a sun-drenched terrace overlooking the water.

Because the lake is a protected natural monument, powered boats are strictly forbidden, preserving a tranquil sanctuary ideal for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers searching for poetic alpine vistas.

History

Geological Formation and History

Crestasee owes its creation to one of the largest prehistoric natural events in the Alps: the Flims Rockslide (Flimser Bergsturz), which occurred approximately 9,500 years ago. Millions of cubic meters of rock tumbled down into the valley, altering the topography and creating basin depressions that eventually filled with water.

Unlike many alpine lakes fed by muddy glacial streams, Crestasee is entirely supplied by subterranean freshwater springs. This natural filtering process through glacial limestone sediment accounts for its incredible water purity and distinctive intense color hues.

Since the late 19th century, the lake has been recognized as a scenic retreat. The historic Gasthaus Crestasee has welcomed travelers since 1892, retaining much of its traditional Swiss architectural character while safeguarding the natural reserve around the lake basin.
