About National Gallery of Modern Art

The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi stands as the shrine of modern visual expression in India. Situated at the prestigious end of Rajpath near India Gate, this iconic institution spans across the former winter residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, known as Jaipur House, alongside modern wing extensions that house extraordinary masterpieces spanning over 150 years of artistic evolution.

Visitors to NGMA are treated to a comprehensive journey through Indian modernism. The permanent collection features rare paintings, sculptures, graphics, and early photographs dating from the mid-19th century onward. Highlights include masterpieces by pioneer artists such as Raja Ravi Varma, Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Amrita Sher-Gil, Jamini Roy, Thomas Daniell, and Rabindranath Tagore, along with iconic modernists like M.F. Husain, Tyeb Mehta, S.H. Raza, F.N. Souza, and K.G. Subramanyan.

Beyond indoor gallery rooms, the museum features a serene outdoor sculpture garden where dynamic bronze, stone, and metal sculptures sit among lush greens. The gallery also regularly hosts international art exchanges, special curated retrospectives, educational workshops, and film screenings on contemporary culture.

History

The origin of the National Gallery of Modern Art traces back to the early post-independence era of India. The idea of establishing a dedicated national gallery for modern art was actively promoted by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and artist associations interested in fostering cultural heritage alongside modern aesthetic identities.

On March 29, 1954, NGMA was formally inaugurated by the Vice-President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, in the presence of key artists and art historians. The venue chosen for this repository was Jaipur House, a neoclassical butterfly-shaped palace designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield under the urban planning vision of Sir Edwin Lutyens for the Maharaja of Jaipur in the 1930s.

Over the decades, as the collection expanded exponentially from its initial seed collection of around 200 works, a grand new gallery block was designed and inaugurated in 2009, adding nearly six times more display space. Today, NGMA New Delhi functions as the principal center under the Ministry of Culture, overseeing branch galleries in Mumbai and Bengaluru.
