History
The history and legend surrounding Nageshwar Jyotirlinga are deeply rooted in ancient Hindu scriptures, particularly the Shiva Purana. The most prominent legend associated with this Jyotirlinga revolves around the demon Daruka and his forest, Darukavan.
According to the legend, Daruka was a powerful and cruel demoness who had received a boon from Parvati, allowing her to rule over a forest named Darukavan. She used her powers to terrorize and imprison countless devotees of Lord Shiva, including a devout Brahmin named Supriya. While in captivity, Supriya encouraged his fellow prisoners to chant the sacred mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' and worship a miniature Shiva Lingam made of clay. Daruka, enraged by their devotion, threatened them with dire consequences.
At this critical juncture, Lord Shiva manifested himself as a magnificent Jyotirlinga (a column of light) in the Darukavan forest. His divine presence instantly terrified Daruka and her demonic army. Lord Shiva, in his benevolent form, vanquished Daruka and liberated all the imprisoned devotees. He then declared that he would forever reside in this place as Nageshwar, the 'Lord of Serpents', to protect his devotees and grant their wishes. He also promised to protect Darukavan (the forest), hence the name 'Darukavaneshwar' is also associated with this Jyotirlinga.
It is important to note that there are three prominent shrines in India that claim to be the original Nageshwar Jyotirlinga: the one near Dwarka in Gujarat, the one at Audhgram near Parbhani in Maharashtra, and Jageshwar in Uttarakhand.
