Devotees from across the globe visit Omkareshwar to seek blessings from Lord Shiva. The island houses two main temples dedicated to Shiva: Omkareshwar on the island and Amareshwar (Mamleshwar) on the southern bank of the river. According to ancient tradition, visiting both temples completes the pilgrimage.
The temple architecture boasts grand carved pillars, intricate stone carvings, and a serene ambiance heightened by the holy waters of the Narmada. The parikrama (circumambulation) around Mandhata Island is a popular trek offering magnificent river vistas and ancient shrines along the path.
History
The historical and mythological roots of Omkareshwar date back thousands of years to ancient Hindu scriptures like the Shiva Purana and the Skanda Purana.
According to legend, Vindhya Parvat (the Vindhya Mountain Range) performed rigorous penance to appease Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva appeared and granted his desire, consecrating himself in two forms at this site—Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar. Another legend describes King Mandhata performing intense austerities here, leading to the island being named Mandhata Island.
Historically, the temple area came under the administration of various dynasties including the Paramaras, the Malwa Sultans, and the Marathas. The Holkars of Indore played a prominent role in renovating and maintaining the complex during the 18th century.
