Carter Road Promenade

Sangeet Samrat Naushad Ali Marg, Carter Road, Bandra West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400050, India

About Carter Road Promenade

The Carter Road Promenade is one of Mumbai’s most beloved coastal hangouts, stretching 1.25 kilometers along the scenic Arabian Sea coastline in Bandra West. Reconstructed and revitalized by the Bandra West Residents Association along with urban architects, this charming walkway offers a tranquil escape from the bustling metropolis.

Lined with palm trees, comfortable seating alcoves, a dog park, a amphitheatre, and dedicated walking tracks, Carter Road is a hotspot for fitness enthusiasts, dog walkers, couples, and tourists alike. The northern stretch opens up to a serene mangrove canopy, showcasing Mumbai's urban biodiversity.

As the sun sets, the promenade comes alive with ocean breezes and street performances. Adjoining the walkway is the famous Carter Road food strip, featuring an eclectic mix of cafes, juice bars, ice cream parlors, and international fast-food outlets.

History

Historically known simply as Carter Road, the stretch was renamed Sangeet Samrat Naushad Ali Marg in honor of the legendary Indian music director Naushad Ali, who lived in the neighborhood.

Until the late 1990s, much of the coastline suffered from environmental degradation and encroachment. In 2002, local citizen groups led by the Bandra West Residents Association (BWRA) partnered with architect P.K. Das to reclaim and redevelop the oceanfront into a public space. Their efforts transformed a littered rocky shore into a world-class paved promenade with ecological preservation initiatives focusing on protecting the adjacent mangrove forests.
