About Priyadarshini Park
Spread over 20 acres along the scenic shoreline of Nepean Sea Road, Priyadarshini Park (affectionately known as PDP) is one of South Mumbai’s most beloved urban oases. Flanked by the crashing waves of the Arabian Sea on one side and towering residential high-rises on the other, this lush waterfront enclave provides a desperate breath of fresh air amidst Mumbai's dense urban environment.
A Sanctuary for Health, Recreation, and Leisure
Priyadarshini Park is more than just a manicured green garden; it is a full-fledged community hub and sports complex. Fitness enthusiasts gather here at sunrise and sunset to make use of the world-class 8-lane synthetic track, tennis courts, basketball court, and outdoor fitness stations. The park also houses specialized training grounds for athletics, yoga pavilions, and sea-facing jogging paths.
For those looking to unwind, the sea-facing rock promenade is the place to be. Here, visitors can sit on smooth stone benches or granite boulders, listening to the rhythm of the waves while soaking in unobstructed views of the horizon. As evening falls, orange and purple hues paint the sky, making it a premier spot for sunset lovers and photographers.

History
The story of Priyadarshini Park is an inspiring tale of citizen activism and environmental preservation. Prior to the late 1970s, the rocky stretch along Nepean Sea Road was largely undeveloped reclaimed land that faced severe threats of commercial real estate exploitation and illegal dumping.
The Citizen Movement
In 1978, local residents led by visionary community leaders formed the Malabar Hill Citizens' Forum (MHCF). Armed with a vision to protect the coastline and create a dedicated public green space, the forum petitioned local authorities to stop commercial developments on the plot. Through persistent legal and social efforts, the land was entrusted to the MHCF to be developed and maintained as a public park.
Over the next decade, decades of stony ground and coastal silt were meticulously converted into a sprawling botanical haven. Thousands of tree saplings were planted, sports infrastructure was developed, and sea defenses were built to prevent erosion. The park was named Priyadarshini Park in honor of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (Priyadarshini being her middle name), symbolizing beauty, strength, and national pride. Today, it stands as a shining example of community-driven ecological preservation in urban India.
