Shivaji Park

Shivaji Park, Dadar West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400028, India

About Shivaji Park

Spread across 113,000 square meters, Shivaji Park is not merely a urban green space; it is the beating heart of Mumbai's cultural, sports, and civic life. Located in the charming neighborhood of Dadar West, the park is bordered by elegant art-deco and traditional residential buildings, cozy cafes, and lush trees, offering a distinct old-world charm amidst the modern hustle of the city.

For cricket enthusiasts, Shivaji Park is revered as a sacred ground. It has nurtured generations of world-class cricketers, including legendary figures like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Wadekar, and Vinod Kambli under the tutelage of famed coaches like Ramakant Achrekar. On any given day, visitors can see dozens of young boys and girls in crisp whites practicing at various 'nets' across the massive red-dirt ground.

Beyond sports, the park serves as a beloved community hub. The low perimeter wall surrounding the park, affectionately known as the 'katta', is a popular spot for locals of all ages to sit, sip cutting chai, discuss politics, and enjoy the coastal breeze flowing in from the nearby Dadar Chowpatty beach.

History

Established in 1925 by the Bombay Municipal Corporation under British rule, the park was officially named 'Shivaji Park' in 1927 in honor of the revered 17th-century Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. A prominent equestrian bronze statue of Shivaji Maharaj stands near the park's entrance, installed in 1966.

Throughout the 20th century, Shivaji Park played a crucial role in India's freedom struggle and post-independence sociopolitical movements. It was a key focal point for the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti movement in the 1950s, which fought for the creation of a linguistic state for Marathi-speaking people with Mumbai as its capital.

The ground has also hosted historic rallies by major political figures, social reformers, and freedom fighters, making it one of the most politically significant public grounds in Western India.
