About Takht Sri Akal Takht Sahib
Takht Sri Akal Takht Sahib, meaning the 'Throne of the Timeless One', is one of the five seats of temporal authority (Takhts) in Sikhism. Located directly opposite the sacred Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, Punjab, it represents the sovereignty of the Sikh nation and the integration of spiritual and temporal life.
While the Harmandir Sahib symbolizes spiritual guidance and divine communion, the Akal Takht represents justice, political guidance, and temporal leadership. It is here that the Hukamnamas (edicts or decrees) affecting the global Sikh community are issued by the Jathedar (chief authority).
Visitors to the Akal Takht can observe ancient arms and weapons used by Sikh Gurus and revered Sikh warriors, displayed every evening during the ceremonial assembly. The architecture of the building reflects classical Sikh design with ornate marble, gilded domes, and intricate motifs.
History
The Akal Takht was founded by the sixth Sikh Master, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, in 1606, alongside revered Sikh stalwarts Baba Buddha Ji and Bhai Gurdas Ji. Guru Hargobind Ji established the throne to signify that Sikhs had both spiritual authority (Piri) and political/temporal responsibility (Miri).
Historically, the Akal Takht served as a gathering place where the Sikh community assembled to discuss national security, justice, and social affairs. During the 18th century, warrior-generals of the Sikh Confederacy (Misls) held bi-annual assemblies (Sarbat Khalsa) here to formulate strategy against foreign invasions.
The structure has been rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries, notably after damage sustained during 18th-century conflicts and during Operation Blue Star in June 1984. The current structure stands as a grand five-story complex built with deep devotion by the global Sikh sangaat.
