About Kamakshi Amman Temple

The Kamakshi Amman Temple is one of the most sacred and magnificent shrines dedicated to the divine feminine in South India. Located in the ancient temple city of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, this temple is uniquely distinguished as the main Shakti shrine in the region, where Goddess Kamakshi (an avatar of Parvati) presides in a seated Padmasana posture, holding a sugarcane bow and a quiver of flowers.

Unlike other temple towns where Goddess Parvati has separate shrines alongside Shiva temples, in Kanchipuram, Goddess Kamakshi is considered the supreme deity residing over the entire city, with all local Shiva temples oriented towards her shrine.

Visitors to the complex will encounter a sprawling architectural site featuring a serene temple tank (Chakra Tirtham), grand gopurams (gateway towers), intricately carved mandapams, and an overwhelming atmosphere of devotion. The central sanctum, known as the Gayatri Mandapam, houses the deity under a golden vimanam roof.

History

The history of the Kamakshi Amman Temple stretches back through over a millennium of South Indian dynasties. Originally constructed under the patronage of the Pallava Kings around the 5th to 8th centuries CE, the temple underwent major expansions under the Chola and Vijayanagara empires in later centuries.

According to local traditions and sacred texts, great philosopher and theologian Adi Shankaracharya visited Kanchipuram in the 8th century and established the Srichakra (a sacred geometrical form representing the Divine Mother) directly in front of the primary deity to channel and soothe the fierce energy of the goddess into a benevolent form.

The temple is historically counted as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and holds supreme importance in Shaktism, marking it as a centerpiece of Dravidian religious architecture and cultural heritage.
