About Hanuman Garhi Ayodhya
Hanuman Garhi is one of the most prominent and sacred shrines in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Constructed in the shape of a massive 4-sided fort with circular bastions at each corner, this 10th-century temple sits on a high hillock overlooking the city. Tradition dictates that devotees must visit Hanuman Garhi to seek the blessings of Lord Hanuman before proceeding to the Ram Janmabhoomi temple.
To reach the main sanctuary, visitors climb a flight of 76 grand stone steps. At the top, the sanctum sanctorum features a unique and touching idol depicting a young Lord Hanuman sitting on the lap of his mother, Mata Anjani. The temple premises resonate with sacred chants, devotional energy, and the playful presence of resident monkeys, adding to its distinct spiritual atmosphere.
History
The history of Hanuman Garhi dates back several centuries, with the original structure believed to have been established around the 10th century. According to local lore, Lord Hanuman resided at this strategic elevated location to protect the holy city of Ayodhya after Lord Rama's coronation.
In the 18th century, Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, the ruler of Awadh, assisted in the renovation and expansion of the temple complex after his son was miraculously cured of a critical illness following prayers offered at this shrine. The Nawab granted vast tracts of land for the temple's upkeep, cementing its historical legacy of cross-community devotion and royal patronage.
