About Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is widely regarded as one of the most revered spiritual sanctuaries in Hinduism. Located in the ancient city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Vishwanatha or Vishweshwara, meaning the 'Ruler of the Universe'.
Standing gracefully on the western bank of the sacred River Ganges, the temple is an essential pilgrimage destination for millions of devotees worldwide. Visiting Kashi Vishwanath and taking a dip in the holy Ganges is believed to cleanse one's sins and lead to liberation (Moksha).
The newly constructed Kashi Vishwanath Corridor seamlessly connects the temple complex directly to the historic ghats, offering a spacious, majestic, and serene experience for pilgrims traversing from Lalita Ghat directly to the inner sanctum.
History
The history of Kashi Vishwanath is as ancient as Indian civilization itself. Mentioned prominently in sacred Puranic texts, the temple has survived numerous cycles of destruction and rebirth across centuries.
The present structure was built in 1780 by the noble queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, after previous iterations were destroyed during foreign invasions. In 1835, Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab generously donated nearly 1,000 kilograms of pure gold to plate the iconic spires and dome of the temple, earning it the beloved title of the 'Golden Temple of Varanasi'.
In 2021, the temple underwent its most ambitious expansion in modern history with the inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor project, which significantly widened the precincts and modernized amenities while maintaining the deep spiritual heritage of the site.
