About Chandi Devi Temple Haridwar
Situated gracefully on the crest of Neel Parvat on the eastern summit of the Shivalik Hills, the Chandi Devi Temple is one of the most venerated shrines in Haridwar. Dedicated to Goddess Chandi—a powerful incarnation of Shakti—this sanctuary holds immense spiritual significance. Along with Mansa Devi and Maya Devi, it forms the sacred triad of Siddha Peethas in Haridwar, where divine wishes are believed to be fulfilled by the deity.
Visiting the shrine is a memorable blend of spiritual devotion and scenic splendor. Pilgrims can reach the temple complex either by embarking on a picturesque 3 km steep trek up the verdant hill or by taking the swift cable car ride known locally as the 'Udan Khatola'. The aerial cable car journey offers breathtaking bird's-eye views of the sacred Ganges River meandering through the bustling city of Haridwar below.
Within the main sanctum, the central idol of Goddess Chandi stands in serene majesty. Devotees flock here throughout the year, especially during the vibrant festival of Navratri and the monumental Kumbh Mela, to seek blessings, offer coconuts and red chunris, and partake in the soulful morning and evening aartis. Near the main shrine, visitors can also pay respects at the temple of Anjani Devi, mother of Lord Hanuman, nestled on the same hill.
History
The historical and mythological roots of the Chandi Devi Temple stretch back thousands of years. According to Hindu mythology, the demon kings Shumbha and Nishumbha captured the kingdom of Lord Indra and drove the Devas out of heaven. In response, a divine goddess emerged from the energy of Goddess Parvati, taking the fierce form of Goddess Chandi to destroy the demon forces.
Legend states that after slaying the demon commanders Chanda and Munda, and subsequently Shumbha and Nishumbha, the Goddess rested atop Neel Parvat. The location thus became infused with her divine presence. The original idol of Goddess Chandi inside the main sanctum is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD, making it one of the oldest sacred seats of worship in the region.
The modern stone structure that shelters the ancient idol today was built in 1929 by King Suchat Singh of Kashmir. The temple's robust architecture has withstood mountain weather for decades, remaining a beacon of enduring faith for millions of pilgrims traveling across the Indian subcontinent.
