About Kedarnath Jyotirlinga
Nestled against the breathtaking backdrop of the snow-capped Kedar Dome and surrounding Himalayan peaks, Kedarnath Jyotirlinga stands as one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. Situated near the source of the pristine Mandakini River in Uttarakhand, it is the highest among the twelve revered Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and an integral part of both the Chota Char Dham and Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuits.
The current temple structure, built of massive gray stone slabs, has withstood centuries of harsh winter snows and catastrophic floods, serving as an iconic symbol of faith, resilience, and spiritual devotion. Thousands of pilgrims undertake the arduous high-altitude trek each year between May and November to seek blessings from the conical rock form representing Lord Shiva within the sanctum sanctorum.
History
According to Hindu mythology, the origin of Kedarnath is deeply intertwined with the epic Mahabharata. Following the great war at Kurukshetra, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sin of fratricide. Shiva, elusive to their pleas, assumed the form of a bull and hid among grazing cattle in the Garhwal region. When Bhima recognized Him, the bull dived into the ground, leaving behind its hump at Kedarnath. Other parts of Shiva's body appeared at four other locations, collectively forming the Panch Kedar.
Historically, the ancient shrine was rejuvenated in the 8th century CE by the great philosopher and theologian Adi Shankaracharya, who consolidated the traditions of the temple before taking his Samadhi behind the main temple complex. Architectural analysis indicates that the sturdy stone superstructure was erected around the 10th to 12th century, designed with extraordinary precision to endure the severe alpine environment.
