Poveglia Island

Poveglia Island, Venetian Lagoon, 30100 Venice, Italy

About Poveglia Island

Poveglia Island is a small, hauntingly secluded island situated in the Venetian Lagoon between Venice and Lido. Uninhabited and strictly off-limits to standard tourism, Poveglia carries a formidable reputation as one of the world's most mysterious and dark-historied locations. Over the centuries, the island transitioned from a thriving community to a strategic defensive post, and eventually to a lazaretto—a quarantine station for infectious diseases—before hosting a psychiatric facility in the 20th century.

Today, nature has slowly reclaimed Poveglia's deteriorating brick buildings, bell tower, and overgrown pathways. The quiet island stands in stark contrast to the bustling canals of nearby Venice, attracting interest from historians, paranormal investigators, and adventurous travelers who view it from boat tours operating in the lagoon.

History

Poveglia's documented history begins in 421 AD when residents of Padua and Este fled to the island to escape barbarian invasions. For centuries, it remained a peaceful and prosperous settlement with its own church and community governance. However, during the War of Chioggia in 1379, the population was relocated to Lido, and Poveglia was converted into a military fortification with an octagonal earthen fort that still remains nearby.

In 1776, the island was placed under the jurisdiction of the Public Health Office and served as a checkpoint for ships arriving in Venice. During outbreaks of the Bubonic Plague (Black Death), Poveglia served as a quarantine station (lazaretto) where thousands of infected individuals were isolated. In 1922, the existing structures were repurposed into a hospital for the mentally ill, which operated until its eventual closure in 1968. Since then, the island has remained abandoned and under the ownership of the Italian state.
