About Kamalaya Koh Samui
Tucked away on the lush, granite-strewn southern tip of Koh Samui, Kamalaya is far more than a luxury beach resort—it is a world-celebrated sanctuary for holistic health, personal growth, and deep physical renewal. Cascading down a steep, tropical hillside toward a private, secluded bay at Laem Set, the sanctuary’s architecture and landscaping are meticulously designed to harmonise with nature rather than dominate it. Ancient boulders, towering coconut palms, and winding stone pathways blend effortlessly with open-air pavilions, infinity pools, and serene dining spaces.
At the spiritual heart of Kamalaya lies an ancient cave that was once used by Buddhist monks as a place of retreat and silent meditation. This sacred energy permeates the entire resort, inviting guests to slow down, disconnect from modern distractions, and re-establish a sense of internal balance. Whether you are seeking relief from chronic stress, detoxifying your body, recovering from emotional burnout, or deepening your yoga and meditation practice, Kamalaya offers customized multi-day wellness programs directed by an experienced team of naturopaths, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, Ayurveda specialists, and fitness experts.
Dining at Kamalaya is an integral part of the healing journey. The resort’s two primary restaurants, Soma and Amrita, serve nourishing, gourmet meals cooked with organic, locally sourced produce. The menus blend Asian and Western culinary traditions, proving that healthy, anti-inflammatory food can be deeply satisfying and full of flavor. Guests can unwind by the lap pool, enjoy herbal steam caverns built into natural granite outcrops, or participate in complimentary daily group wellness classes including Qi Gong, Pranayama, and Hatha Yoga.
History
The story of Kamalaya Koh Samui is deeply intertwined with spiritual discipline and holistic philosophy. The sanctuary was co-founded in 2005 by John and Karina Stewart. John spent 16 years living as a traditional monk in the Indian Himalayas, absorbing ancient Eastern philosophies and spiritual disciplines. Karina, a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a practitioner of various natural healing arts, brought her extensive clinical knowledge and passion for integrative medicine.
Together, they envisioned a sanctuary where Eastern wisdom and Western medicine could meet to offer genuine holistic healing. When searching for the right land on Koh Samui, they stumbled upon an untouched hillside littered with colossal granite boulders. Deep within this terrain was a centuries-old cave that local villagers revered as a holy place where Buddhist monks had stayed during their pilgrimages to meditate and practice mindfulness.
Recognizing the powerful ambient energy of the site, John and Karina preserved the cave intact, building the sanctuary around it. The name Kamalaya translates to 'Lotus Realm'—a symbolic reference to the unfolding of the human spirit. Over the past two decades, Kamalaya has grown into a world-leading wellness destination, winning scores of international awards while remaining steadfastly rooted in its founding spiritual principles.
