Udupi Sri Krishna Temple
Udupi Sri Krishna Temple

The Udupi Sri Krishna Temple (Sri Krishna Matha) is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in Southern India. Established in the 13th century by the great Dvaita philosopher Sri Madhvacharya, this temple complex resembles a living monastic city surrounded by eight mathas (Ashta Mathas).A unique aspect of this temple is that deity worship is not performed directly face-to-face. Instead, devotees view the idol of Lord Krishna through a silver-plated carved window with nine holes, known as the Kanakana Kindi (Kanaka's Window). The idol itself depicts Lord Krishna as a young boy holding a churning rod in one hand and a rope in the other.Key Features & HighlightsKanakana Kindi: The famous window through which Kanakadasa, a great saint and devotee, had darshan when he was barred from entering the temple due to caste restrictions. Legend says the deity turned around to face west so Kanakadasa could see Him.Madhwa Sarovara: A holy temple tank located within the complex, used for ritual bathing and floating festival processions.Anna Brahma (Annadana): Free meals served daily to thousands of pilgrims, showcasing the deep tradition of hospitality.

Mookambika Temple

Discover the Sacred Sanctuaries of Kollur MookambikaTucked away in the tranquil embrace of the Western Ghats, the Mookambika Temple at Kollur stands as one of South India's most spiritually charged and culturally cherished destinations. The shrine is unique because it honors Goddess Mookambika as a divine synthesis of the holy trinity of goddesses: Saraswati (Wisdom), Lakshmi (Wealth), and Parvati (Power). The central deity is enshrined in two forms—a naturally formed Udhbhava Linga divided into two unequal halves by a golden line (symbolizing both Shiv-Shakti and the divine mothers) and a exquisite four-armed panchaloha idol carved and installed by the great saint Adi Shankaracharya.Spiritual Ambience & TraditionsEvery morning, the temple reverberates with ancient Vedic chants, the ringing of bells, and the fragrance of fresh flowers, camphor, and sandalwood. Devotees from across the globe, especially from Kerala and Karnataka, gather here to seek blessings for education, arts, and spiritual growth. The temple is famous for conducting Vidyarambha rituals, where young children write their first alphabets in rice grains under the guidance of priests to initiate their journey into learning.A visit to Kollur is incomplete without taking a sacred dip in the nearby Souparnika River. Legends say that the mythical eagle King Garuda (Suparna) performed penance along these banks, giving the river its name and impregnating its waters with rich medicinal herbs from the Kodachadri mountain range.

Virupaksha Temple Hampi

Standing proudly on the southern bank of the sacred Tungabhadra River, the Virupaksha Temple is the spiritual heart of Hampi. Unlike many of the surrounding monuments that lie in majestic ruin, Virupaksha has remained an uninterrupted place of worship since the 7th century AD, making it one of India's oldest functioning temples.Dedicated to Lord Virupaksha, an aspect of Lord Shiva, and his consort Goddess Pampa (the local river goddess), the temple complex expands over a vast courtyard surrounded by covered pillared halls, inner sanctums, and smaller shrines. The centerpiece of the complex is the striking 9-tiered Eastern Gopuram (gateway tower), which towers over 50 meters high and dominates the skyline of Hampi Bazaar.Key Highlights & FeaturesThe Pin-Hole Camera Effect: One of the most fascinating features inside the temple complex is a dark hall where an inverted shadow of the massive Eastern Gopuram is projected onto a wall through a tiny opening, demonstrating an early understanding of optical mechanics.Lakshmi the Temple Elephant: Visitors often receive a gentle blessing on the head from Lakshmi, the beloved resident temple elephant, in exchange for a coin or a bunch of bananas.Intricate Reliefs & Paintings: The ceilings of the main pillared hall (Ranga Mantapa) feature magnificent 14th to 16th-century ceiling paintings depicting mythological scenes, including the marriage of Shiva and Pampa and the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu.
