Visitors can explore neighboring spiritual sites, including the Bhagirath Shila where King Bhagirath is believed to have meditated, and the mesmerizing natural rock formation of Surya Kund where the river plunges into a deep gorge.
Perched majestically at an altitude of approximately 3,291 meters above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas, Yamunotri Temple marks the official origin of the holy Yamuna River. Serving as the first stop in the revered Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand, this shrine draws thousands of devout pilgrims and adventurous trekkers every year between May and October.The main attraction inside the temple complex is the black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna, alongside a white marble idol of Goddess Ganga. Right outside the temple premise lies the famed Surya Kund, a natural thermal hot spring where water boils at extreme temperatures. Pilgrims traditionally cook rice and potatoes wrapped in a cloth in this boiling water to offer as Prasad to the deity.Surrounding the shrine are rugged granite walls, snow-dusted peaks, and the breathtaking views of the Bandarpunch mountain range. Trekking up to Yamunotri from Janki Chatti takes visitors through serene oak and rhododendron forests, roaring cascades, and panoramic alpine scenery.
